About SelectmySurgeon

SelectmySurgeon was set up in 2008 by seven consultants from Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge who saw a need for an independent referral system for high quality surgeons.
The top private insurance companies all allow some freedom for patients to choose their own surgeons, but most patients rely on the recommendation of their GP, who will only be familiar with a few names.
The intention of SelectmySurgeon is to make it easier for the patient to make direct contact with the surgeon, and for surgeons to build a reputation for the quality of their work.
Where possible patients themselves are asked for feedback and surgeons given the right to respond. This will begin to build an independent referral system that will be highly beneficial to patients, GPs, surgeons and private hospitals, and create greater transparency in the selection process.
The founding group are still very closely involved in the development of the service, they are:
- Basil Matta, Anaesthetist;
- Gordon Wishart, Consultant Breast & Endocrine Surgeon and Director of the Cambridge Breast Unit;
- Gerald Hackett, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist;
- Patrick Axon, Consultant ENT surgeon and Director of ENT services;
- Andrew "Fred" Robinson, Orthopaedic Surgeon;
- Michael Irwin, Consultant Plastic Surgeon and Unit Director of the Department of Plastic Surgery;
- Graham Keene, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
